A novel machine learning technology can now help identify clusters of learning difficulties that children struggle with at school with health conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism or dyslexia.
Having a child with a learning disability does not make it any less intelligent from the other kids around their age. It simply means that they are eager to learn, however, need a distinct way of learning. They have difficulty picking things up majorly because their brain works differently.
Artificial intelligence is consistently opening new doors for educators and their students, even those with learning disabilities. The promise of a more personalized education with the use of artificial intelligence is appealing. Academics may become much simpler for students with learning disabilities who have historically struggled to grasp the material and keep up with their peers in an academic setting.
For educators seeking to identify learning difficulties of children struggling at school, machine learning could offer a powerful, new way to assess their cognitive skills, according to researchers from the Medical Research Council (MRC) Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit at the University of Cambridge.
Now, this study has suggested that with the help of AI, children with autism spectrum disorder (a developmental disorder that affects communication and behaviour) can improve their communication and social skills by almost 30 percent. AI and robots are great tutors for autistic children because they can repeat instructions, stories and answers numerous times, without getting fatigued. Children, in turn, are able to improve their social skills and maintain relationships with the AI-based device. In fact, children with autism are more open to robots and AI than they are to humans. Researchers have found out that it’s because robots are not as complex as humans when it comes to emotional communication; they are kind of like toys.

Therapists and educators around the world are testing several new technologies to help children with ASD develop social skills. Where humans can be unpredictable and overwhelming, ASD children tend to feel more comfortable with the predictable range of human expression exhibited by social robots. Perhaps more important to some children, robots and AI don’t pass any judgment: “AI machines will never make fun of” the child. Even though AI and machines lack emotions, they are making people feel a lot more comfortable in sharing their true feelings, knowing that the machine will help them and not judge them. However, the emergence of such AI-based alternatives raises another question — will the conventional methods of emotional and mental health care that involve human interaction become obsolete?!!
